Preview: Galaxy Note 9 “Crown” gets interesting

Today we’re running down the latest in Samsung Galaxy Note 9 “Crown” tips and rumors before the big release. This smartphone, nicknamed “Crown”, is almost certain to replace the Galaxy Note 8 much in the same way the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus replaced the S8 and S8 Plus. The differences might seem slight to some – but for power users, the changes here will be significant.

Display and Fingerprint Scanner

Rumor has it Samsung’s almost ready to implement the latest in in-screen fingerprint registry with the Galaxy Note 9. This rumor’s been floating around in one form or another since the Galaxy Note 7. But given the live and in-effect examples of the technology appearing with several big-name smartphones over the past few months, it looks like Samsung’s in a “now or never” sort of position.

The display on the Galaxy Note 9 was tipped as just a tiny bit bigger than the Galaxy Note 8. That’ll make for a device that needs a new smartphone case – no re-using this time around. Where the Galaxy Note 8 had a 6.3-inch panel, the Note 9’s said to come with a display that’s 6.4-inches large.

We’re still expecting right around the same number of pixels across the device’s panel at 2960 x 1440. That along with Super AMOLED technology means we’ll once again be looking at one of the most top-quality panels ever made for any device, ever. NOTE: Images of the Galaxy Note 9 in this article were designed and rendered by DBSDesigning – modification of backgrounds by CB for SlashGear.

Camera

While Samsung’s still not quite matched what Google’s team does for HDR+ on their Pixel 2, the camera on the Note 9’s sure to give the market a run for its money. If the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 has the same camera setup as the Galaxy S9 Plus, that’ll mean a 12MP + 12MP camera duo with the newest in image processing technology via the processor(s) on which Samsung decides.

NOTE: The specs we’re listing here and in the chart you see in this article are based on anonymous sources, predictions based on precedent, and well-informed industry analyzation. Until Samsung releases their own set of specs, we won’t know the entire truth for certain!

Battery Size

As it is with each new smartphone, there’ll be the talk of new battery optimization. But what we’re hoping for here is raw, real size. Even if it means the Galaxy Note 9 is a little thicker than its predecessor, we’re hoping the 4,000mAh battery size tip is truthful. That and wireless charging and the option of USB-C quick-charging should make for a beast.

Pricing and Releasing

The release date for this smartphone won’t be all that surprising – unless Samsung deviates well away from the expected August release. September wouldn’t be a big shocker for the reveal, as it was last year. Don’t expect Samsung to come especially early with this device, regardless of whatever their competition does to switch things up.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 will probably come in at around the same price as its predecessor. Think $950 or more. A bigger set of specs than what’s offered by Apple, for ever-so-slightly smaller a price. Don’t expect the Galaxy Note 9 to bow down to any “X” phone any time soon.

Render shows 2018 iPhone SE in all its budget glory

Two or three new renders and a video from a solid source indicate what may be the cutting edge iPhone SE. The gadget demonstrated looks a great deal like the prior adaptation, yet refreshed with a portion of Apple’s most up to date tech.

Person Holding Silver Iphone 5s

Most quite, the Home catch is gone, being supplanted by a screen pattern with Face ID sensors.

The renders originate from Steve Hemmerstoffer, who additionally passes by the @OnLeaks handle on Twitter. He’s the wellspring of some iPhone 8 renders that turned out a very long time before the genuine gadget yet swung put to be right on the money.

All things considered, he’s mindful of these new pictures. Hemmerstoffer said on Twitter “I can’t affirm if this one is in part or totally precise or even exists however notwithstanding that chose to share it for dialog purposes as it were.”

These renders were discharged in conjunction with TigerMobiles.com, who is hosting a full exhibit of images and a video.

Despite the fact that this minimal effort show is relied upon to dispatch at Apple Overall Engineers Gathering in June, if not previously, little agreement has risen about its determinations.

White Apple Iphone on Wooden Table

As talked about, the @OnLeaks pictures demonstrate the 2018 iPhone SE utilizing Face ID and an edge-to-edge screen. So, equal renders indicating to demonstrate this handset highlight a Home catch and the standard substantial best and base bezels.

Hemmerstoffer’s render demonstrates the up and coming iOS show without an earphone jack. Other rumors have said the same, yet a few pictures as of late starting in China supposedly show the gadget brandishing a sound port.

Remote charging is another region where there’s no assertion. The present render seems to have a metal back, blocking this element. Different bits of gossip have said the next SE model will have remote charging.

In any event, there’s been little contradiction about the reports that Apple next spending gadget will have the Apple A10 processor that appeared in the iPhone 7. What’s more, it’s required to cost the same as the present SE forms. Be that as it may, these are just about the main angles where there’s some sort of accord.

It appears everybody may need to hold up until the 2018 iPhone SE is authoritatively reported to discover what it brings to the table.

Apple Seems Set To Blow It, Again, With The iPhone SE2

The iPhone SE was never truly intended to be a gadget that overwhelms the opposition. Of course, it had the intense internals of the iPhone 6S in the casing of an iPhone 5, however separated from that, for all intents and purposes everything about the gadget gives the feeling that Apple never truly buckled down in guaranteeing that its 4-inch handset had the same, or even comparative, impact as its more costly kin in the lead iPhone arrangement.

At the point when the primary iPhone SE was discharged in 2016, numerous clients and commentators regretted the way that Apple truly took the body of the 2012-time iPhone 5 and stuck in the internals of the iPhone 6S. That is truly amazing as far as how Apple fit the vast majority of the handling energy of the bigger, more powerful iPhone 6S out of a little edge, yet plan shrewd, the gadget was without a doubt disappointing. It was extremely hard to get energized, all things considered, about a gadget that takes a gander no less than 4-years of age at that point.

As noted in a Forbes report, be that as it may, the up and coming and very reputed iPhone SE2 will include the exact same body as the 2012-time iPhone 5 and the 2016-made iPhone SE. This implies in every practical sense, there is a decent shot that Apple will discharge a cell phone in 2018 with a 6-year-old plan —  save for a glass back, which is unexpected since the iPhone 5 was the successor to the glass-supported iPhone 4S from 2011, as noted in a GSM Arena report.

On the off chance that releases and gossipy tidbits about the gadget are any signs, the cell phone will even element an indistinguishable show from its 2012-time antecedent. Case creators for iPhones have spilled data apparently affirming these hypotheses too.

The iPhone SE was not an awful cell phone. Its execution was incredible and it was reduced. What truly cut it down was its obsolete plan. What’s especially bothersome for the iPhone SE2 is that Apple is by all accounts doing precisely the same for the 2018-age handset — just more terrible.

Considering the significant jump in the outline that Apple took off for the iPhone X, all things considered, it likely wouldn’t be excessively troublesome for the cell phone producer, making it impossible to give the iPhone SE2 adjusted corners, or a show superior to the 1136 x 640 board that was industry-driving in 2012.

Oh dear, in view of holes about the gadget, there is a decent possibility that Apple’s iPhone SE2 will be much the same as its ancestor — a gadget with great internals combined with an extremely apathetic outline.

New iPhone SE will steal one of iPhone X’s best features

Apple’s new iPhone SE is shaping up to be the biggest upgrade the smallest, most affordable iPhone has seen in years. Alongside more powerful internals, the 4-inch device is expected to come with a tweaked design that makes way for one of iPhone X’s best features.

The iPhone SE hasn’t had a proper refresh in more than two years. Apple did release new models with increased storage options last spring, but it upgraded nothing else. It is expected to make up for that next month with the “iPhone SE 2.”

iPhone SE won’t get an edge-to-edge display and Face ID just yet — Apple needs to maintain its affordable price tag. But it will be a big improvement over its predecessors.

iPhone SE 2 will go wireless

Reliable leaker Benjamin Geskin claims the new iPhone SE, codenamed Jaguar, will feature wireless charging just like iPhone X. To make that possible, Apple is expected to scrap the handset’s aluminum unibody first introduced with iPhone 5 in favor of a shiny glass back panel.

The new design, depicted in the gorgeous render above, will fit in nicely alongside Apple’s newest iPhone lineup, which now features the glass back panels across the board. It is also expected to lose its headphone jack, but it will retain Touch ID and a physical Home button.

iPhone SE encryption

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard the iPhone SE 2 could come with wireless charging, which would allow users to conveniently top up using any Qi charging pad. Check out our roundup of the best wireless charging pads for iPhone if you haven’t already snapped one up.

The new iPhone SE, with a faster A10 Fusion processor, will make its official debut next month, according to recent reports.

Amazon’s Alexa App Finally Gains Support for iPhone X

Amazon today updated its Alexa app for iOS devices to introduce iPhone X compatibility, allowing the app to be displayed full screen on the longer display of the iPhone X.

Prior to today, the Amazon Alexa app displayed unattractive black bars at the bottom and top of the app, so this should be a welcome change for Amazon users who have an iPhone X. The addition of Alexa support comes just over a month after Amazon promised the update was in the works.

The Alexa app for iOS is designed to be a companion to Alexa devices, allowing iPhone users to set up and manage Alexa-enabled equipment.

While many popular apps have been updated with support for the display of the iPhone X, there are still some notable holdouts even months after the release of the new smartphone. Inbox by Gmail, for example, continues to lack iPhone X support, as do several Apple apps, including iMovie, iTunes Connect, iTunes Remote, and AirPort Utility.

iPhone X demand slows as iPhone 8 and 8 Plus mix climbs in March quarter

CIRP is out with another report today with fresh data on the mix of iPhone sales and which models are selling best. The latest details show iPhone 8/8 Plus leading the way with growth from the holiday quarter into the calendar Q1, while iPhone X is seeing a decline.
CIRP found iPhone 8 made up 23% of iPhone sales for 2018 Q1, with iPhone 8 Plus trailing at 21%. Apple’s $1,000+ iPhone X took just 16% of the share. Together that put the less expensive iPhone 8 models at 44%, almost three times that of iPhone X sales.
CIRP co-founder, Josh Lowitz commented on the change for Apple’s 2018 iPhone from the holiday quarter to the January-March quarter.
iPhone X saw its share fall to 16%, down from 20% in the December 2017 quarter. iPhone 8 and 8 Plus share improved relative to the December 2017 quarter, combining at 44% of sales, compared to 41% in the last quarter.
Because of the reduced iPhone X sales, CIRP expects a QoQ drop of the iPhone ASP, but it will still be a YoY increase.
Meanwhile, with the release of the RED iPhone 8/8 Plus this month, we could see iPhone X account for even less of the iPhone mix for Q2 2018 sales.
CIRP notes that the older 6s and 7 models still account for a good mix of iPhone sales. iPhone 7/7 Plus made up for just shy of 20% of iPhone sales, while the 6s/6s Plus took 13%. iPhone SE took 8% of the mix.
In the chart below, you can see the broader fragmentation with 2018 bringing more iPhone models to market than ever before.

Apple May Offer Two 6.1-Inch iPhone Models in 2018 With Price Tag as Low as $550

A more affordable iPhone may be heading our way: Apple is rumored to be releasing a 6.1-inch iPhone in the fall priced as low as $550.

That tidbit comes from KGI analyst and frequent Apple commentator Ming-Chi Kuo by way of MacRumors.

Three Pencils, Eyeglasses, and Smartphone on White Table

In a KGI investor’s note, Kuo claims that the 6.1-inch iPhone could come in two variants: one with dual SIM card compatibility and one that only supports a single SIM. The single SIM variant is said to cost anywhere between $550 and $650 (that range converts to about £390-£460 or AU$710-AU$840), while the dual-SIM variant is said to cost $650 to $750 (about £460-£530 or AU$840-AU$970), according to the note.

Apple’sApple’s current flagship, the iPhone X, costs a whopping $999 (£999 in the UK and AU$1,579 in Australia), but the price jumps up if you opt for extra storage: $1,149, £1,149 or AU$1,829.

A cheaper iPhone would give Apple the tools to globally compete against a swell of midpriced and budget Android phones.

Black Iphone 7 on Brown Table

kuo predicts that the 6.1-inch iPhone may release as the cheapest option alongside two premium models: a 5.8-inch iPhone X successor with an OLED screen, and a 6.5-inch OLED iPhone X Plus.

Analysts from UBS predicted that the 2018 OLED iPhone could cost around $1,100. Unfortunately, this seems totally plausible since the 256GB iPhone X already hovers at this rate.

This rumor of a 6.1-inch iPhone joins another that Apple could give its budget iPhone SE a refresh by the end of 2018. Recently, Apple registered a handful of brand-new iPhone model numbers with a Eurasian regulatory organization. Since this indicates that new iPhones could be released in the near future, we’re hoping that the iPhone SE 2 is around the corner.

Most Useful 3D Touch Gestures on iPhone

3D Touch is a feature that’s been around since the 2015 release of the iPhone 6s, and it’s become an integral gesture system on all of Apple’s latest iPhones.

Though it’s been around for a while, there are several hidden and less obvious 3D Touch gestures that you may have forgotten or might not be aware of, especially if you don’t use the feature often. In our most recent YouTube video and in the guide below, we’ve highlighted some of the most useful and lesser known 3D Touch gestures.

3D Touch Cursor

Whenever you’re typing something using the default iOS keyboard on the iPhone, if you 3D Touch, the keyboard turns blank and morphs into a trackpad that allows you to quickly move the cursor on the screen through the text you’ve written.

This is a useful gesture that allows you to make quick edits without having to reach up and tap the display.

If you hold the cursor over a word for a short length of time, you can also use it to select text for deleting multiple words, copying and pasting, formatting, and other purposes.

You can use this cursor gesture in Mail, Notes, Messages, and more on 3D Touch-enabled devices running iOS 11.

Control Center

In Control Center on devices running iOS 11, you can 3D Touch on almost all of the included icons to get additional control options and shortcut access.

Some of the available options are listed below:

  • Wi-Fi – 3D Touch the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth box to get additional options for AirDrop and Personal Hotspot.
  • Music – 3D Touch for additional Music control options both for the iPhone and for connected devices that include HomePod and Apple TV.
  • Brightness – 3D Touch the brightness control to see a larger slider and to access options for Night Shift and True Tone.
  • Volume – 3D Touch to see a larger slider.
  • Flashlight – 3D Touch to change the brightness of the rear flash, aka the “Flashlight.” There are four brightness levels.
  • Timer – 3D Touch to choose a timer length using a built-in slider bar.
  • Calculator – 3D Touch to copy your last result.
  • Camera – 3D Touch to access quick options for taking a selfie, recording a video, recording a Slo-mo video, or taking a portrait.
  • Home – 3D Touch to access controls for your favorite scenes and accessories.
  • Screen Recording – 3D Touch for options that include screen recording to camera roll or Facebook, turning the microphone on and off, and starting a recording.
  • Wallet – 3D Touch for a shortcut to your default credit or debit card and an option to access your last transaction.
  • Notes – 3D Touch to access shortcuts to create a new note, a new checklist, a new photo, or a new sketch.
  • Remote – 3D Touch for a full Apple TV Remote interface.

Prioritizing App Downloads

When you’re downloading a bunch of updates from the App Store, if you 3D Touch on an app that’s pending, you can force it to download first. This is useful if you’re stuck with an app that’s loading but needs to access it quickly.

You can also cancel downloads and pause downloads with this feature.

Bonus: In the App Store itself, if you 3D Touch on the icon, you can update all of your apps with a quick tap that doesn’t require actually opening up the App Store app and navigating to the Updates tab. There are also shortcuts for accessing your purchased apps, redeeming a gift card or promo code, and conducting a search. Note: The “Update All” icon doesn’t seem to appear reliably at all times, which may be due to a bug.

Previewing, Sharing, and Saving Photos

In the Photos app, if you 3D Touch on a thumbnail, you can see a preview of the image without needing to tap to open it, which is known as a Peek and Pop gesture. Swipe up after the initial 3D Touch to get access to options to copy a photo, share a photo, favorite a photo, or show additional photos from the same day.

You can use this same gesture in Safari and other apps that have images, such as Messages, Mail, and Apple News. For example, 3D Touch on an image in Safari, swipe upward, and you’ll see options to save the image to your camera roll or copy it. Make sure to 3D Touch and then immediately swipe, because if you continue to hold down it will initiate a full “pop” gesture which eliminates the quick save option.

Bonus: 3D Touch on the Photos app icon to get access some fun and useful shortcuts to your most recent photos, your favorite photos, photos from one year ago, or a search interface.

Third-Party App Shortcuts

Apple made 3D Touch available to third-party developers, and there are now hundreds of popular apps that have incorporated it, offering up new options on compatible iPhones.

3D Touch, for example, enables pressure sensitive drawing and writing in note-taking and sketching apps, and it’s even been incorporated as a control method in some games. BlackboxAsphalt 8: Airborne, and BADLAND 2 are all examples of games that incorporate 3D Touch in some way.

On a more basic level, most apps have Home screen shortcuts accessible using 3D Touch. Instagram, for example, lets you access the camera, create a new post, view activity, or switch accounts using 3D Touch options, while Facebook has shortcuts for things like scanning a QR code, searching, or writing a post.

Many apps also support 3D Touch gestures in an app. For example, within Instagram or Facebook, 3D Touch on a thumbnail or a link to a preview of the content. These kinds of Peek and Pop gestures have been built into quite a few third-party apps for a consistent user experience on devices that support 3D Touch.

3D Touch-Compatible Devices

3D Touch continues to be a feature that’s limited to the iPhone, and it’s enabled by a built-in Taptic engine included in every generation since the iPhone 6s. 3D Touch is available on the following iPhones:

  • iPhone 6s
  • iPhone 6s Plus
  • iPhone 7
  • iPhone 7 Plus
  • iPhone 8
  • iPhone 8 Plus
  • iPhone X

Conclusion

3D Touch can do a whole lot more than what’s included in this guide, and the best way to discover everything is liberal use of the feature. 3D Touch on third-party app icons to see what shortcuts are available, 3D Touch within apps to see if there are built-in 3D Touch gestures, and give it a try in all of Apple’s apps, most of which have been built with 3D Touch integration.

Apple grabs 86% of smartphone profits globally, iPhone X alone seizes 35%

New research covering the last calendar quarter of 2017 suggests that not only did Apple once again command the lion’s share of the smartphone market’s profit, but the iPhone X was responsible for collecting more than one-third of it.

According to a study by Counterpoint Research seen by AppleInsider, Apple gained one percent of the profit year over year in a static smartphone market. Not only that, but the iPhone X itself generated five times the profit than the combined profits of over 600 Android manufacturers during the fourth quarter of 2017.

“The share of iPhone X is likely to grow as it advances further into its life-cycle,” said Counterpoint Research Analyst Karn Chauhan. “Additionally, the longer shelf life of all iPhones ensured that Apple still has eight out of top 10 smartphones, including its three-year-old models, generating the most profits compared to current competing smartphones from other OEMs.”

Counterpoint expects more stiff competition in the next year — but it has predicted the same for the last two years, and it has not yet materialized.

In Apple’s quarterly earnings statement, Apple CEO Tim Cook declared that since it shipped to customers, the iPhone X was the biggest seller every week during the holiday season that was being examined by Counterpoint, outpacing the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus through November and December.

“[The] iPhone X surpassed our expectations and has been our top-selling iPhone every week since it shipped in November,” Cook said. “We’ve also achieved a significant milestone with our active installed base of devices reaching 1.3 billion in January. That’s an increase of 30 percent in just two years, which is a testament to the popularity of our products and the loyalty and satisfaction of our customers.”

Clarifying his statement, Cook added during the question and answers session that the iPhone X popularity has continued to the early-February earnings announcement, and was not just limited to the holiday quarter.

The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus which held the number two and three spots in the Centerpoint research, shipped to customers starting on Sept. 22. Rumors quickly started after the iPhone X commencement of sales on Nov. 2 that the iPhone 8 Plus was more popular than the iPhone 8 was, and manufacturing orders were being shifted to accommodate the balance, and the then stock-limited iPhone X.

The iPhone X pre-order process rapidly progressed to six-week back-orders. However, most if not all of the supply issues were resolved by mid-December, with the device readily found on store shelves the week before Christmas.

As of late, reports from the supply chain are predicting low demand for the iPhone X based on the supply chain, but all have questionable accuracy. Apple will report its earnings for the second quarter of its fiscal year 2018 on March 1 — but will not break out sales volumes for each model of phone.
